Government Projects
With the recent change in national government policy towards development, regarding the green belt and housing stock numbers, local governments are presented with a significant opportunity that comes with inherent archaeological risk. European Archaeological Surveyors have the knowledge, training, and skills to help local governments mitigate this risk through large-scale pre-planning aerial archaeological landscape surveys. European Archaeological Surveyors aim to use our proficiency in landscape archaeology to help you, mitigate risk and drive down costs while protecting our shared historic environment with a high return on investment.
Our Aim
European Archaeological Surveyors aims to champion and protect the historic environment, making it accessible and engaging for all. We support these priorities by promoting pride of place through discovering, mapping, and disseminating archaeological information, connecting communities. We are committed to inclusivity, information sharing, and climate action, while safeguarding heritage assets.
By focusing on underexplored rural landscapes vulnerable to heritage crime and development, European Archaeological Surveyors help local governments enhance stewardship of national landscapes, inform better planning and conservation strategies, and raise awareness among local communities about heritage protection.
Additionally, European Archaeological Surveyors are on the cutting edge of innovative machine learning methodologies developed to transform mapping efficiency, delivering significant cost savings for our clients, maximising societal benefits through effective resource use.
Outcomes
Address Knowledge Gaps
Aerial archaeological surveys present the best means for identifying the degree and type of human occupation over a large area. This is because aerial surveys are faster, cheaper, perform better at scale, and provide comparable results per surveyed area compared to other remote sensing methodologies. Indeed, the most common reason Historic Environment Record Offices request these surveys is that they are the most cost-effective means of addressing knowledge gaps at a landscape level.
Identify to Protect, Showcase, and Exploit National Landscapes
With the inexorable rise in population density and the consequent pressures created by demands for more efficient farming and leisure areas, councils are under increasing developmental pressures. By utilising the extremely cost-effective approach of aerial investigation and mapping to discover and plot the extant archaeology within the landscape, these projects allow governments to identify, save, and protect their archaeology.
Disseminate Mapping and Knowledge to Maximise Opportunities and Interactions
While a survey would undoubtedly benefit the local governments, our clients often aim to build for the future by informing the community, researchers, and commercial interests in archaeology. This is typically achieved through a series of signposts such as publications, presentations, and social media updates developed in collaboration with the body in question.
Products
Signposting - Before and during the project
The amount and type of signposting will vary depending on the client's aims; however, these typically include the publication of an introductory report and the publication of a work-in-progress report in a local journal.
Summary Report
Summary reports allow us to present a summary of the archaeology identified and its national importance to the client. Typically, this would also be shared on a public forum such as ADS, allowing the public to understand better and engage with their local archaeology.
Production of Accurate Mapping
The aim is to provide the local Historic Environment Record Office with the most up-to-date and accurate mapping of monuments so that more informed planning decisions can be made.
Signposting - Following the project
The amount and type of signposting will vary depending on the client's aims; however, these typically include the publication of a summary post, the presentation of results to a professional audience, and a presentation to the general public.
